I was mid-sweep on the 20-site probe set (coupon sites, Cloudflare-static pages, FastAPI backends) when Shifter's endpoint generator froze after I clicked "Generate." I waited. Nothing. Refreshed. Nothing. Then, suddenly, 148 unique IPs appeared in the log. That's when it clicked: this wasn't just a slow platform. It was a bottleneck in disguise.

For 18 months I've run 2 to 5 million scrapes monthly across protected sites (a coupon-scraping system, an AI visibility tool tracking AI-SRE and LLM observability trends). I've tested every major provider. Shifter stands alone: the most diverse IP pool I've measured (117 ASNs, 46 countries), and the slowest transport of the six. The 117-ASN pool that doesn't cash out

I've used proxy networks since 2018, when a single proxy failure cost me a lifetime AppSumo customer. Now, with AI visibility tools and 15+ coupon sites scraping daily, I don't want a large pool; I need one that works. Shifter's 117 ASNs across 46 countries are real. I saw them in the dashboard. I measured them in the pool drain: 148 unique IPs across 148 requests. No repeats. 100% rotation.

Then I tried to switch from rotating to sticky. I clicked "increase proxy count," and nothing changed. The interface didn't update. I refreshed. Suddenly I was in sticky mode. No toggle. No warning. No way to confirm what I was getting.

That's not just about the pool; it's about control. Shifter's dashboard makes control impossible: no real-time feedback when filters apply, no live count of active IPs, no visual signal that a country filter reduced the pool. You're left guessing.

I've used webshare's clean filter previews and decodo's live pool counters. Shifter's interface feels like reverse engineering. I spent 20 minutes just confirming whether I was using rotating or sticky sessions. That's not a UI; it's a time sink.

The 4.5% timeout tax

I ran 2,460 request rows across 20 sites (not a neutral CDN: actual protected targets). Shifter's overall success came in at 70.1%, second-lowest of six providers. The real cost wasn't the raw success number: it was the 4.5% timeout rate, the highest in the market.

At c1, 7.0% of requests just hung: one in fourteen. Worse than its own c8 rate. That's not a scaling issue; it's a systemic failure at the gateway.

In my coupon system, a 4.5% timeout rate compounds fast (every batch loses roughly one request in 22). The IPs aren't the problem; the pipe is clogged. That's the real moat, and it costs more than money: you pay in idle requests, retries, and manual reprocessing.

You pay in time, not money

The median latency is 2,402ms, the slowest of the six. At c8, p95 hits 7,577ms (over seven seconds for the tail of every batch). Under load, the p50 drifted from 2,172ms at c1 to 2,784ms at c8, roughly a 600ms climb. That's the opposite shape of decodo or byteful, where latency stays flat across concurrency.

The gateway split is where it gets specific. Shifter's US gateway measures 1,390ms p50, its fastest regional gateway, but still trailing dataimpulse's US at 1,303ms. The global gateway sits at 1,874ms, nearly 600ms slower than dataimpulse's global (1,280ms).

Cost, latency, and timeout across the six-provider set

I've built systems that run on predictable timing. Shifter doesn't deliver predictable timing. It's not a speed issue; it's a timing tax.

The dashboard that feels like a gamble

I've used proxy services for four years. I've seen clean UIs, live feedback, and real-time pool counts. Shifter's dashboard is a gamble: pick a filter, wait, refresh, guess.

I selected "US + 100+ ASNs," waited three seconds, and nothing changed. Refreshed. Now the filter stuck, or did it? No way to tell. Switching between rotating and sticky needs refreshes, sometimes several, with no toggle and no feedback.

And there's no protocol selector: no HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS5 in the endpoint generator. You're stuck with whatever the system defaults to.

Decodo and webshare both show live filter impact and protocol options. Shifter doesn't. It isn't just a UX flaw; it's a workflow killer.

For indie hackers who need a massive pool and are willing to debug their own setup, the diversity might still be worth it. For anyone relying on a clean, reliable config UI at scale, the alternatives are obvious (decodo or webshare).

The support that makes you wait

I reached out via email when the endpoint generator froze during a critical config change. The reply came days later, not because the issue was complex, but because there's no live channel at all.

In 2026, a trained chatbot (decodo's Codette, webshare's Webby) isn't a luxury; it's the industry standard. Shifter still relies on email. That's not support; it's a delay tactic. Waiting days for a response is a liability for any pipeline that can't afford downtime.

The browser tier saved Zillow, not the pipeline

The browser tier (camoufox / playwright) rescued sites that were 0% walls in previous runs. That was the single biggest finding across all six providers.

On Zillow, Shifter hit 96.2%, matching dataimpulse. On Amazon, 94.6%. Agoda 96.9%. Booking 96.9%. Those targets are elite for Shifter.

The irony: the browser tier turned 0% walls into 90%+ passes on every provider. The transport stack, not the proxy, decided the outcome. So the 117 ASNs helped, but only because the browser tier did the real work. The gateway still held the pipeline back.

The one thing that surprised me

I thought the 117-ASN pool would be the hero, that it would make Shifter unbeatable.

What surprised me was this: the slowest provider still cleared Zillow at 96.2%, a PerimeterX wall that stopped some other providers cold on prior runs. That's not speed; that's exit-node reputation. A clean IP pool trumps raw latency.

The cost of that reputation: 4.5% timeouts, 2,402ms p50, and a dashboard that feels like a gamble. The most diverse pool in the market, and the slowest transport: pool diversity doesn't help when the gateway is the bottleneck.
